The TCRA 2015 seminar is being held April 24th and 25th in Greenville, South Carolina. The weekend will begin with an industry supplier tour on Friday and technical session on Saturday.
This year, Koyo has invited TCRA to tour their Technical Center and Walhalla Thrust Bearing factory. Koyo is a name that may be unfamiliar to many of us, but in fact, the name represents the legacy of the Torrington Company; a US manufacturing company that can trace its roots back to 1866. Torrington was originally a sewing needle manufacturer, but over the years the company evolved, eventually becoming the major manufacturer of Torrington needle bearings that are so familiar to the transmission industry. Several ownership changes took place over the years, the last in 2009 with the Torrington needle bearing production being sold to JTEKT, the parent company of Koyo. With this, Koyo became the OEM supplier of needle bearings for the majority of transmissions and torque converters. Koyo marketed bearings using the Torrington brand name until January 2013. The Koyo bearings you purchase today are made in the same plants, by the same people, as the Torrington products you were previously familiar with.
We will be visiting the Research and Development center in Greenville, where Engineering, prototyping and needle bearing analysis takes place. Then, we will head to the Walhalla production plant for a tour. This facility dates back to 1960 when it began making high speed knitting needles. Today the plant produces Thrust Bearings, Thrust Races, Stamped Ball Bearings and Needle Bearings.
There is no doubt that this tour will be a unique opportunity to see the manufacture and technology behind these important components to our industry.
