Recently a TCRA member encountered a problem regarding a late model 604 converter. He was in need of replacing the turbine hub; however, he did not have the replacement part in stock.
He was inquiring if it was possible to modify the existing converter by changing the turbine and piston to an earlier design with a larger O-ring and backup O-ring? He was hesitant to make the modification without confirming the design modification wouldn’t cause more problems.
It turns out this modification is safe and works well when in need of making this replacement.
You can easily make these modifications and give your customer a quality rebuild, so long as you also replace the stator with an earlier model stator. By keeping the parts uniformed, the converter is able to operate correctly and efficiently.
